This is how we really get to know a character deeply. Having access to his/her private thoughts gives us more to grasp onto than if we only see actions. Ransome gave us glimpses of each character's inner thoughts at least a few times--John alone & proud at the helm of the Goblin, Susan frustrated when the rest of the Swallows show up "just in time" for her now dried-out trout supper, Dick on his solo trip to the island in the loch, Roger while searching for the gold mine, and of course, Dorothea's alternate story lines & Titty's rich inner world many times. I can't recall a specific time we are actually in Peggy's mind, unless it has to do with lightning. And, back to John's post, we see into Nancy's thoughts in WH.
