My impression, when I visited Vancouver Island, was that spruce only grew within a stone's throw of tidewater. I don't think I came up with this observation independently, I think I read it on one of those informative notices that are placed in national parks etc but, when I looked at the tree cover, I could only see spruce very close to the shore. Even 50 metres back and may be 5 metres up,it seemed to have ben repalced by other trees. Perhaps it was a special kind of spruce, perhaps it was a local phenomenon, perhaps I'm imagining it all.
