Mary Swainson's father
He wouldn't have been that old - 40-odd? Nor dead necessarily, in answer to Jon. He could have gone away from farming, perhaps to be a vet, or a forester or entered a "profession". The farming "gene" has perhaps jumped a generation to his daughter Mary, who is virtually keeping Swainson's farm going, and will inherit.
Mrs Barrable and Mrs McGinty
They are both "Mrs" - titles were strict in those days. Had they been unmarried, they would have been "Miss". In any case, we are told that Mrs McGinty had had a husband - a wild Irishman, I recall.
Who Harry Bangate? Dear me! Bottom of the class, Peter !
