In AR's stories, there are a number of characters who are missing, possibly having died in action in WWI. I can think of the following (and there may be more):

Well, this could be fun (although maybe less fun for them):

Bob Blackett Probably the most likely to have met a tragic end, given Nancy's reaction at the cairn. Casualty of war or the Spanish flu seems very likely. But it could have been anything- remember penicillin wasn't used until about 1944 and TB killed George Orwell as late as 1950, only just after the triple drug therapy was developed (now there was a real tragedy); life was precarious then...

Billy Lewthwaite's father & Mary Swainson's father They would most likely have died of old age. I don't know what life expectancy would have been then...

Mr Barrable Do you think there was a Mr Barrable? Mrs Barrable sounds the very kind of lady to have remained a spinster. I had a spinster great aunt from about that period; it wasn't regarded as anything unusual. Come to think of it she was a spirited lady, great fun. Everybody loved her.

George Owdon's father That's possible- Owdon was being looked after by his uncle, wasn't he?

Mr Tyson A farmer, again. A hard life. Maybe not a long one.

Jim Brading's father Another uncle in play- called Bob... Although Jim sails with him, do we actually know that Brading pere is no longer alive?

Harry Bangate's father Who Harry?

Mrs McGinty's husband. Another spinster in service?

What's fascinating is how AR creates a rich texture, but very economically so it never weighs the stories down.
