Just discovered that Birds of the British Isles, edited by Jim Flegg, specifically mentions AR. There's a double-page spread on read-throated, black-throated and GN divers, within which the section on GNs begins with the following paragraph:

"The huge and spectacular great northern diver was made famous for many in Arthur Ransome's book for children, Great Northern [question mark omitted]. In most years, some adults spend the summer on remote lochs in northern Scotland, and once every few years a pair attempts to breed. Only once in recent decades, in 1970, has breeding proved succesful and resulted in a couple of youngsters."
