I’m intrigued by the resonances with the Cottingley fairy photo hoax http://www.museumofhoaxes.com/hoax/Hoaxipedia/Cottingley_Fairies/
in which two girls faked photographs of fairies and caught a whole lot of supposedly intelligent adults (including Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) hook line and sinker. The hoax took place between 1917 and 1920 so presumably AR would have been aware of the photos and may have concluded both that people can both fake photographs and believe obvious hoaxes to be true.
