The 'problem' that I see with BS and CC (and SW) is that a subsidiary cast of characters pops up, needing character development, their own part of the plot, etc. Our interest is drawn, but not repaid by later knowledge. Think of the growth of Dick and Dorothea's characters from WH to PM. We may enjoy Port and Starboard, Tom Dudgeon and the Death and Glories, and even the Eels, but they only get one book apiece to be developed and become real to us. Yes, the D&G's are in CC, but they are definitely subsidiary characters there. It's not until BS that we really get to know them.
