There are two valuable products obtained by the distillation of wood. One being charcoal, of course, but the other is Stockholm [or pine] tar, which seems to get overlooked in most discussions. As well as being familiar to the boatbuilder, sailor and farrier, I have a feeling that it was used quite a bit in Pharmaceuticals.
