There is an odd moment in "Pigeon Post", at the end of the chapter when they have spend a day unhappily prospecting - the day after the first dowsing experiment - when, over supper in Mrs Tyson's farm house, not wanting to talk about dowsing, they talk about "other holidays" - sailing, battles and ... the making up of a story in the cabin of a wherry...!
This must be a case of "Homer nodding" - the D's would have wanted to know where the wherry was, whether Peter Duck knew Jim Woodall and so on.
