I love your "In Crowd's" signalling methods, Ed. I used to do much the same thing with some mates too, but by blinking -- one eye or two, for a dot or dash. But of course you had to be pretty close to see what the other was doing.
(There's also a lovely bit in one of John Winton's books -- he of "We Joined The Navy" fame, but I think the book in question was "Down The Hatch"-- where Dagwood signals in Morse to a girl he's with the letters UBITCH by kissing her on the neck in shorts and longs. Harrumph, better be careful here, little ears might be listening....)
I love the fact that you can signal Good Night to your granddaughter next door -- how great for both of you.
By the way, your rueful comment a few days ago about no boats in Ky, only horses, rang a very loud bell with me when I started reading "The Far Distant Oxus" for the first time (a pristine copy of which I had picked up in a bookshop last weekend.) I got exactly the same disappointed feeling from realising about the book that its theme was going to be horses, not boats.
