We are talking about an era on the range of 80 years ago. Even in my own 1960's childhood, we didn't wear helmets to ride bikes, and I don't recall wearing lifejackets on the occasions when I did get in a boat.

Certainly, the times are very different now- people are more concerned that things can go wrong and more (often over-) protective. Plus, there's the whole avoiding lawsuits thing. You could argue that it's the lawyers or the differing parenting habits or boomers vs. Gen X vs. millenials, but it's a change that appears to be here to stay.
