I always read it that 6/8 just happened to be the sum the children had been able to amass, and that Uncle Frank, on counting it, had agreed that that was the correct amount -- but also that that would have been his response whatever the sum proffered might have happened to have been.
I'm interested that you show £1.00.00 as being the pre-decimal form of notation, Owen. Here we always wrote it as £1/-/- whereas six-and-eightpence was usually as I put it above -- although sometimes (presumably in order to distinguish it from a musical time signature) as 6/8d.
