There's a young girl who has just set out from Brisbane (I think it is) to do the very same thing. I admire their determination, although it isn't what I would like to do. I always enjoyed the social aspect of sailing. I sailed my 23ft yacht single-handed several times, but only on a lake, not the open ocean. My later 36ft gaff ketch had too many strings to pull, and one needed to be in several places at once, so single-handed sailing wasn't possible. In the case of the central characters in our favourite stories, there are always siblings there. It is only with peripheral characters where we see single people, such as Tom D, The Mastodon, and Jackie. While the D&Gs are individually single, they operate as a unit, almost like brothers.
