As Peter H says, we've discussed this topic many times over the years and why not? It can be illuminating to learn why a particular book, incident or character has become someone's favourite and I'm always curious about what popularity polls reveal about AR and his readers. Personally, I find there is not a perfect alignment between popularity (as in how often I pick up a book) and literary merit. Whenever someone champions PP, WD, ML or PD, I am forced to agree that these books are especially well crafted; on the other hand despite a number of faults, I never seem to tire of the muddy exploration in SW. Like many others, I can relate more readily to the Ds than to the earnest Walkers or hearty Blacketts and I love snow, so obviously, WH is up there as one of the best but more and more, I'm with Peter C and put PM at the very top o my list.
One of the things that does surprise me in these discussions is how rarely CC, SD and SA itself are mentioned. Surely some people must love the dreamtime of SA above all else? And if you love the Lakes, doesn't SD tick all the boxes with hound trails, bog trotting and peak bagging? As for CC, the Ds centre stage, lots of sailing, new territory to explore and all those birds, what more could you want?
