Perhaps, it is time for two editions (in much the same way as the Harry Potter series.... But the full edition should include an explanation and discussion by someone such as Christina Hardyment or Hugh Brogan who know the works.
That would be the ideal solution, although I'm not at all sure that in that case, the 'Classic' edition would be a viable proposition for any publisher.
Provided the original version was available in some form, maybe even on line, it would be a reasonable idea. But I agree that the originals couldn't now be sold in general book shops, and sadly I have to say that that is absolutely right, and the only possible way forward.
Casual racism and its effects are very serious matters, and can't be left alone.
