I remember reading somewhere an argument about the 'aunt as ogre' as seen in the works of the Victorian/Edwardian writers- Wodehouse, Saki, Kipling, etc., that blamed it on Empire. Children weren't kept in India or wherever, but sent back to England and raised by relatives. (Many of whom weren't suited for raising parakeets, let alone humans)
