As Michael Farringdon commented and Arthur Ransome illustrated in all of his S&A books, maps are often very useful in making the action more understandable.

Ransome, however, seems to be quite unusual among authors in providing clear maps of his books which (apart from Secet Water) are not essential to the plot, just helpful to the reader in clarifying what is happening where and the relationship between the various places.

The first other author of fiction, whether children`s or adult, who comes immediately to mind in doing this is JRR Tolkien and I can think of a few others but they are pretty well all fantasy authors who have had to invent their own worlds whereas Ransome`s world is set (mostly) in the real world or a very close version of it.
