In Big Tiger and Christian: Their Adventures in Mongolia Fritz Mülenweg also provides maps of their progress from Peking to Urumqi (not today's spellings). The book is divided into two parts and each has a map showing the route taken. The map compares well with a map today of the border between China/"Inner Mongolia" and Mongolia itself; they mostly skirted along that that border - across the Gobi desert. The original was German and titled "A Secret Mission through the Gobi Desert" (translation; the original is In geheimer Mission durch die Wüste Gobi). Published in the early 1950s; reviews at http://allthingsransome.net/rrreviews/bigtigerandchristian.html.
