There are references to Christmas gifts- at least one of the knives was one. Didn't Coot Club occur in the Easter/Spring holidays. My theory is that holidays require adults- to buy the presents, hide the eggs, etc., etc., and these stories are primarily about the children- no adults allowed. (Well, maybe CF, but he acts pretty much like a larger kid, albeit one with resources.)
