I was turned back from airport security once because of the tiny penknife I carry with my car-keys. It had passed security on many occasions, and indeed I never really considered it as a possibility for refusal of entry.

I do use the knife once in a while, but mainly it has sentimental value for me as it belonged to my father and is I suppose fifty or more years old. The whole knife, closed, measures about an inch-and-a-quarter by a quarter-inch by something even less, and the blade itself is an inch long. Hardly your terrorist weapon of choice I would have thought.... But the little tough on airport security at the time was one of those youngsters you sometimes see in positions of authority which they shouldn't occupy, interested primarily in throwing their weight around. So I suppose I shouldn't have been as surprised as I was at the incident.

Those who are interested in happy endings will be pleased to learn that I still have the knife though, it's still with my car-keys, and that it's passed successfully through airport security many times before and since that one incident.
