What Peter said. Also, AR wrote real plots with no purple-ness in them either. There are no mysteries to solve or spies to find. Enid Blyton or any number of other children's writers would have made Squashy Hat a real villain- instead he turns out to be a friend. The children may play at being pirates or explorers, but a foot (usually Susan's!) is kept firmly on the ground at all times.
