This musical adaption may not be literal AR, but I can't see how any stage production could be. This may be a bit further removed from AR's original book than say the WDMTGTS production a few years ago (I assume because I didn't see it) but then the musical The Sound of Music and subsequent film didn't faithfully reflect the home life of the von Trapp family in Austria.
This new S&A is a musical, not a play and certainly not the book and to expect a literal transformation between the forms seems to me to be uncalled for. Perhaps the writers and director have moved further from the original than you would like but that is their commercial and artistic decision.
If they are correct and its a smash hit, AR's book sales go through the roof and a dozen new films are made in a Harry Potter like series would that have been a bad outcome? If it sinks without trace because the public isn't ready for a Ransome musical, what harm is really done?
