Please don't knock the 1960's series too much. I watched it as a 9 year old at the time and have been a life-long Ransome fan ever since. Perhaps my critical perceptions were undeveloped and I didn't come to the series with any pre-conceptions, not having read the books but I found the story enthralling.
At the time I identified with Roger most and remember being captivated by the dynamism of the Amazons. When I watched the 1974 film some years later I was less impressed by the casting. In particular the role of Capt. Flint as played by Ronald Fraser. The actor who played this part in the 60's production was certainly not as described by AR, being younger and bearded, but he was quite threatening in his manner and his confrontation with the Swallows which really gave the story an edge.
Watching the odd clip from the 60's series, I now find it rather twee, perhaps the world has changed after 40+ years, but as I said at the time I found the series so enthralling that I'm still here all these years later.
