I own the series of books, my mum and I enjoyed them when I was younger. In some ways I liked how the characters changed in each book, but the location was the same. I reread them a year ago and still enjoyed them.

One of the later books won Lucy M Boston the Carnegie Medal in 1961, but I always preferred the first two. If you like reading about old houses with hidden secrets, children playing, life old-fashioned and new, magic, animals....then you will probably revel in them.

It is always hard to know if a children's book, approached for the first time as an adult, can work it's magic...
