Not really Claire. As you know, it's not central to my particular interests.
Poor Kit (unlike 'Peggy') just did not speak as boarding-school Nancy would have done, but for me the sound-vision combination works perfectly!
I believe that the production team had considerable trouble with casting, once a trawl around sailing clubs failed to produce competent dinghy sailors who could act, and they had to settle on a 'John' who was actually the second youngest in the cast.
I expect you know that Sophie Neville was 'researcher' for the CC/BS TV series.
In order to spice-up the screenplay it was arranged for the near collision with the steamer. However, in the event, there was almost a nasty accident that was filmed as a home-movie by (I think) Sophie Neville's parents aboard the steamer along with other clips of the filming. (I have seen a video of the home-movie). During the long wet summer of the filming the children had chaperones (of course) but also tutors.
in 2003 Suzanna Hamilton and Sophy Neville appeared in a Countryfile programme reminiscing about the filming.
I enjoy the film for the way that it captures the spirit of the original (plenty of integrity here!) and for the stunning location photography.
