I love comparing Ransome's book illustrations to the photos he took to help him draw them. Friends were asked to pose for these 'Hollywoods' using makeshift props.
I overheard today on the TV that Linley Sambourne, the Punch cartoonist, did the same thing with his family! He even developed the photos in his bathroom, as Ransome must have done, though Sambourne had a posh marble bath to do it in.
Nowadays we can play the game of 'reverse Hollywoods', and arrange ourselves in position to match a S&A illustration. Who has any photos they'd like to share? (I've only played the game alone, e.g. taking a photo of the Butt & Oyster, or the Wade, from the right standpoint to match the book.)
