Well done Charles! My edition from 1960 (Jonathan Cape hardback) the same passage is on page 246 and reads
"For some time the four explores lay still listening to the rain drumming on the thin tent walls within a few inches of their faces."
My 2004 edition (a reprint of the 1961 type re-set edition, again Jonathan Cape hard back) matches yours.
Perhaps when the type was reset AR took the chance to edit or someone else did!
