It seems to me axiomatic that parents do not buy expensive childrens' books by writers who are not well known if the premise of the story is wildly eccentric or improbable, and Ransome wanted, and needed, to sell.
The point that I was trying to make is that sailing off to the Tropics in yachts in search of buried treasure was something that people, including sub editors from Fleet Street, actually did in the 1930's.
We don't do it now.
