Talk of communities being connected is valid. But small individual generators were available in the early years of the centuary. Travelling showmen carried them around on the front of their steam-engines to power rides and sideshow lighting. Might a boat builder have acquired one to supply power to his shed/home run by a small oil engine or some such?
