Although I don't know for certain, I suspect that they were forced to. National Socialism was pretty mad about such things- its leaders, especially Hitler of course, were deeply damaged people.
But AR's books, I think, may have benefited from the chaos and horror of the war. He may have been driven from pillar to post- having moved from, Low Ludderburn to the east coast, he and the Cook had to uproot once again as the war came to them- but his books were a source of calm sanity. I'm guessing that this did sales no harm at all.
