I've now found the Guardian page in question. The letter (from one Graham Keen) was not referring to Flint and Silver, but to Long John Silver by Björn Larsson, translated into English by Tom Geddes and published by Harvill Press in 1999.

Keen writes: "It tells of his early life before the mast, including shipwreck, smuggling, slavery, escapes and piracy with the notorious Cap'n Flint. A neglected book but with all the elements of a superior boys' own adventure, forming now a fine trilogy with Andrew Motion's Silver: Return to Treasure Island."
