Don't feel afraid to say so Andy! I think it always depends on which version you read/see first. You accept the first pass quite happily...then later discover the unabridged or original version, which may or may not please you.
I usually find I hate seeing a film if I have read the book. They mess it up too much. Yet I see many films without knowing of the book, which might be better.
I guess as long as we all feel a sudden urge to get in a boat, grab a rod, or consume bunloaf, it doesn't matter!
