One aspect of the violence in PD is that it is linked to alcohol; both on the Viper and on the Mary Calhoun, the ship that Peter Duck was on sixty or so years ago. Generally in the books, both drinking and smoking are normal and acceptable in adults. Captain Flint, Ted Walker, Timothy and Peter Duck all smoke pipes; Dr Dudgeon smokes cigarettes (CC6). Jim Brading had promised not to smoke until he left school. In BS2 George Owdon and Ralph Strakey stroll past smoking cigarettes; a hint of disapproval here?
