AR was a pipe smoker. As a former pipe smoker, I can say that there was always a friendly bond between fellow pipe enthusiasts.
This did not seem to exist with cigarette smokers, although it is changing as groups meet outside pubs and workplaces to smoke nowadays.
Some pipe and cigar smokers tended to look down on cigarette smokers as lesser mortals. This attitude seems to come through in AR’s books, where the “baddies” were usually cigarette smokers. Doctors were exempt as, in those days, they were usually too busy to have time smoke and enjoy a pipe or cigar. Also AR had many reasons to be grateful to his doctors and surgeons.
