I seem to remember reading somewhere that Ransome toyed with the idea of using a storm to induce a freak high tide in SW. He was wise to let character steer the plot so that the well-meaning AB contrives the crisis herself but it's still the pitiless tide that brings John's geography field trip to life. I tend to think that Nature makes a worthier, more satisfying opponent than petty human antagonists like Jemmerling and the odious George Owdon. The G.A. is an exception of course but, like Nancy, she is a force of Nature in her own right.
