The books are chronological in the order AR wrote them. However he did start PD before SD, but finished SD first.
This is why there are some references to PD in SD.
AR did have the notion to instruct booksellers not to sell later books to people before they had read the earlier ones. His publishers (Cape) firmly squashed this notion.
