In mid-2003 Des, who was living in New Zealand and was the TARS New Zealand Coordinator at the time, wrote a letter to the U.S. TARS newsletter Signals from TARSUS which was published in the August 2003 edition of the newsletter. Starting in February of 2004, Des contributed several articles to Signals from TARSUS about his experiences as A Fisheries Officer on Lake Victoria in the late 1940s.

Based on those articles, I'd say yes, he was indeed "a bit of a writer".
