I have always assumed that the Ds must have been at least partially inspired by Dick and Des Kelsall. AR was not averse to developing a character from an original with changes of name and gender, but does anybody know whether Des was a bit of a writer?

Having said that, Dick and Dot as two sides of AR's character (and not quite the same two sides as John and Titty... and Captain Flint) makes sense too.
