The photo that Mike found was probably taken in the winter of 1947. There was a prolonged frost lasting into almost the whole of February, and it covered much of Europe. Pack ice was reported off the Belgian coast. Many schools had to close in the UK, including mine, which is why I rather enjoyed that great freeze. 1947 is also the year in which I was given my first Ransome book . . . . which was, inappropriately, 'Picts & Martyrs'.
