Has anybody watched Jonathan Meades's programme on 'the Joy of Essex', last night on BBC4? It'll be on the iPlayer for a week.
The title sounds like a knowing joke, and it is, but as usual for Meades it's a profoundly serious, sometimes very funny, piece about planning, architecture, idealism, trash, all beautifully illustrated and very Meadish. It also has, near the start, some beautiful pictures of a Thames barge slipping past the marshes. They don't make a meal of it, but it looks smashing.
