I don't think that AR can have had any illusions about the nature of the Soviet state by then, especially after what had happened to all the people he had befriended in his time in Moscow. But what's difficult for us to remember nowadays is how soft and useless had been the European democracies' response to Nazism and Fascism. The only real opposition seemed to come from the communists. This what drove so many very unlikely people, poets etc, to join the Party or to fellow travel.

Of course the only real reason we didn't all finish up speaking German is the unbelievable sacrifice and ferocity of the Russians. On the other hand, at around that moment, they were allies of the Nazis and busy attacking and carving up Poland.

Fascinating that in those decades Europe threw up two mad, paranoid and evil leaders at once.
