There's a whole area of discussion as to why they feel the story needs to be updated to suit modern audiences (other than the chance to make even more money of course!)

I think that 'even more money' would be more accurately rendered as 'some money' or even 'any money at all'. Of course they'll be hoping that the pulling power of the books and the reputation will bring in decent sized audiences and loads of cash, but it's a gamble none the less.

I see that BBC films are involved. That should be a good sign. The last one of theirs that I saw was recently, on TV, the story of the Ford women machinists' strike in the 60s. It was really excellent. The period was very well done- and will have involved surprising amounts of money to get the pictures dead right. The characters- the women machinists- were glammed up quite a bit; the originals were very unglamorous, while they used nice but normal looking actresses for the film- it wasn't disturbing. Curiously, they had a 'Barbara Castle' who was very good, but didn't have the sharp sexiness that Csstle had when you met her... The point being that they didn't tart it up, and as they're involved here that's a good sign. From the stills montage they have released, it's very hard to say what they will do, although there's one image of a girl looking smarter and sexier than any AR heroine would ever be. I don't think in that case it means anything about what the film will be like. But it might...
