I agree Peter, but... there was a suggestion in the slide show that it is being made as a coming of age story. I think that the series of books certainly shows the maturing of all the characters, but SA sets the scene for all that follows.
They do have the previous film to contend with to which their effort will be compared, though that has faults it does capture the moment and the core plot of the book. As a comparison of what could happen we only have to look at what Peter Jackson did with The Lord of the Rings (in a good way of course) and what was done with the 1990 version of Lord of the Flies in comparison with the 1963 film and the original book.
There's a whole area of discussion as to why they feel the story needs to be updated to suit modern auidences (other than the chance to make even more money of course!)
