Those who have a copy of Christina Hardyment's Captain Flint's Trunk (2006 version) can see at first hand how awful "bathers" looked. Page 77 includes a photo from about 1930 of Nancy and Peggy prototypes, Pauline and Georgina Rawdon-Smith, wearing what I take to be the garments in question.
