Further to my previous post, here is my Dutch friend's response:
"I would translate 'Wij wilden niet naar zee' as 'We Did Not Want to Go to Sea' (in Dutch titles are not written in capitals!'), but "We didn't mean to go to sea" seems adequate, probably better Emglish too.
Indeed 'helemaal niet onze bedoeling' (not with 'oo' but with 'oe') is something an elderly lady might say, like our outgoing Queen, but not her son and certainly not a child."
