Based on a Cape 1948 edition, I agree with you about the ssw 1/2 w, but in 'On the way to the islands', p.38, there doesn't seem to be a painter trailing in the water. Neither does it have, as you say, a border round the picture but this is true of many (not all) the pictures in SW. For instance the picture of 'Speedy' p.94 and 'Splatchers' p.101 are borderless, whereas 'Landing the gear' p.47 and 'Drifting up with the tide' both have a border on three sides, All the maps seem to have full borders, as does 'The eel dance' on p.333 and 'Like steering through a flooded field' on p.367.

Enough geekery; it looks as though Cape's standards may have slipped a tad during the war. Which was, of course, a noisy time.
