water Hammer:

Is much more common with the incompressible nature of water reacting with the stiff metal. If the water has velocity and it meets a closed wall the effect of shutting of a valve quickly.

Water hammer will destroy anything if it strong enough, I have seen pumps blown to pieces and buildings shaking.

One would place the ram on the stream well away for the house.

The general tenor of how water was discussed in PP at Tyson's and Beckfoot suggests that AR assumed Beckfoot had water on tap. No-one ever soaked their head in the pump water at Beckfoot.
