Cox's Orange Pippin are available in the US from farmers' markets & farm stands. Possibly in England, too

Newton Pippins are very much like Granny Smiths--tart, juicy & vivid green peel, with white flesh. I liked them when I was younger, but prefer a milder apple now--my favorite new variety is Honeycrisp.

Note that the children often had 2 apples apiece after a large meal. Those were the old apple varieties, before scientists started tinkering with them! Probably from a local orchard, and very likely with spots on the peels & occasional oddly-shaped ones :-)
