I think it was after he had fallen down the steps outside Jonathan Cape's he convalesced at Pagham near Bognor Regis. They lived in a small cottage at the edge of Pagham Harbour (a sort of miniature Secret Water) and now a nature reserve. The cottage belonged to the Kelway Bambers who were sailing friends in the 1950s.
