I think that the point is that, much of the time, the S, A and Ds do not act very childishly. Was Ransome reflecting a serious turn of mind among the children of his experience or was it a lack of experience of children?
Compare Richmal Crompton's Just William books where the similarly aged children seem to me to be more childish.
